Vagus Reset
A sequence of four practices that engages the vagus nerve from four different angles. Useful when a single short practice isn't holding.
About 8 minutes
What this is
The Vagus Reset is a short sequence that engages the vagus nerve from four different angles in succession. Each step is researched on its own (links in the steps below); pulling them together adds reliability for moments when a single brief practice isn't enough to shift the state.
Total time is about eight minutes.
When to use it
Use this routine when you have eight uninterrupted minutes and want a deeper reset than a single short practice provides. Good fits include after a hard meeting, before sleep, during a stressful afternoon when one short practice isn't holding, or any time the nervous system feels stuck in high alert.
Why this sequence
Each step targets a different vagal pathway:
- Belly breathing activates the parasympathetic branch through the slow, extended-exhale pathway.
- Humming adds vagal vibration on top of the slow exhale; nasal cavity, throat, and chest all vibrate the vagus directly.
- Cool face reset engages the mammalian dive reflex for a fast cardiac slowdown that breath alone takes longer to produce.
- Relaxation response consolidates the shift, letting the nervous system settle into the new lower-arousal baseline for a longer span.
The cold step is the most intense. If cold isn't available or appropriate (cardiovascular conditions, pregnancy, history of fainting), skip it; the other three steps still produce a meaningful effect on their own.
Steps
-
Active
Belly Breathing
2 minutes
Slow, even breath through the diaphragm. Settles the autonomic nervous system in two minutes.
-
Active
Humming Breath
1.5 minutes
Sustained hum on the exhale. Vagal stimulation through vibration plus a long, controlled release.
-
Intense
Cool Face Reset
0.5 minutes
Cold water on the face engages the mammalian dive reflex, dropping heart rate and pulling the nervous system out of acute stress in seconds.
-
Quiet
Relaxation Response
4 minutes
